First Tooth, First Visit: When Should Your Child See the Dentist?

At Palm Dental, we believe building healthy dental habits starts early, because a confident smile begins with a strong foundation. One of the most common questions we hear from parents is:

“When should I book my child in for their first dental appointment?”

The Ideal Time: Sooner Than You Might Think

Our general recommendation is that a child should visit the dentist by the time their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. The NHS advise to ‘Take your child to the dentist when their first milk teeth appear. This is so they become familiar with the environment and get to know the dentist. The dentist can advise you on how to prevent decay and identify any oral health problems at an early stage. Just opening up the child’s mouth for the dentist to take a look at is useful practice for the future.’

The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry established The Dental Check by One campaign in 2017 to ‘ensure all children see a dentist as their teeth come through, or by the first birthday, at the latest.’

This may seem early, but these initial visits are more about prevention, education, and familiarity than treatment. Early visits help to lay the groundwork for a lifetime of positive dental experiences.

Why Early Dental Visits Matter

  • Prevent problems before they start – Early check-ups help identify any issues with tooth development, oral hygiene, or habits like thumb-sucking.
  • Reduce fear and anxiety – Visiting the dentist from a young age helps children see dental care as a normal, safe part of life.
  • Build good oral health routines – We can show you and your child how to brush, clean between teeth, and care for their smile in age-appropriate ways.
  • Monitor growth and development – Regular visits allow us to keep an eye on how your child’s teeth and jaws are forming.

What to Expect During the First Visit

At Palm Dental, your child’s first visit is gentle, fun, and welcoming. We’ll:

  • Count their teeth and check for any early signs of decay or concerns
  • Discuss teething, diet, fluoride, and brushing habits
  • Make it a positive experience with smiles, not stress

Our team is trained to work with little ones in a calm, caring environment to help them feel comfortable and safe.

  • Read storybooks or watch videos about going to the dentist together
